The Buzz Lightyear Spaceship Command Center… exactly what every young Star Commander needs to patrol the galaxy. This is a cool space ship, kind of a mobile play environment to give Buzz Lightyear and friends a structure for their adventures. Sturdy design, with moving pieces able to ‘pop off’, rather than break. This is a pretty cool option, because I’d much rather reassemble than repair! Measuring 20″ x 5 1/2″ x 15″, the Command Center weighs in at nearly 4 pounds.
Just to be clear up front… there are NO figures that come with it. You’ll have to get them separately. The Toy Story Space series of figures are often recommended for it. But if you’ve shopped around, you know they are very pricy right now. (Buzz and Woody go for over $60!) So it’s nice that Mattel has confirmed, any standard 6″ character will work with the set. Heck, it doesn’t even have to be Buzz Lightyear. As long as it’s a basic 6″ action figure.
Remember Toy Story, the first movie? Buzz’s ‘Space Ship’ was the box he comes in? The Space Ship Command Center is based on that design. With some awesome additions. To begin with, it comes with a small Space Rover vehicle. Just big enough for the 6″ Buzz Lightyear to stand on. The Rover has a small ‘charging facility’ where it can be plugged in and charged (or gassed) up. Maybe it runs on Crystallic Fusion.
As a space ship, Buzz commands from the pilot’s chair. After arrival planetside, the ship can roll on small wheels, or stand vertically, and the doors open to convert into the command center. There are buttons to push for lights, sounds, and voice. But the most exciting feature is the microphone. Speak into the mic, and your voice is amplified. Wonderful fun for kids back as ‘mission command’ giving Buzz his marching orders.
The areas are divided up by function. At the top is Buzz’s observation chamber. Beneath that is the mission launch center. To the left is the Space Rover maintenance and storage room, and to the right is the prison (to keep Zurg safely behind bars). Above the prison room is a trap door. Once Zurg is standing on it, he’s as good as caught.
The product description talks about firing projectiles, but that is actually in reference to the Toy Story Space Mission figures. Buzz Lightyear and Zurg both come with guns that shoot a simple plastic projectile. Again, remember these figures must be bought separately. The video below shows the Buzz Lightyear Spaceship Command Center, plus the Buzz and Zurg figures I’ve mentioned. I love this video, and think maybe Dad is having as much fun as the young reviewer.
The customer reviews are excellent, with most rating it a 4- or 5-star toy. Of the few who rated it lower, the only two complaints I see were price, and durability. Both of which I think were misunderstandings. Price now is a reasonable mid $20 range. Right before Christmas, retailers ran out, and the only available ones were through 3-rd party resellers. Under those circumstances, prices went as high as $70. But dropped again once availability returned.
The durability issue is the same. The toy is designed to pop off when too much pressure is applied to hinges and moving parts. Kids get excited. It’s in a child’s nature to break toys. This is a brilliant concept. Instead of breaking something for good, it just snaps back into place. Sure, it might be a pain constantly having to do so. But isn’t that much better than facing a child’s disappointment because their toy really broke? I’ve seen this trend with several larger Buzz Lightyears recently, and applaud Disney for the forsight this shows.
Final thoughts: Worth it? Heck, yeah!! For $25, you get a durable toy with plenty of options, and adds a whole new level of playability to the Toy Story figures. And for the collectors? Yep. I’d love to use it as a display base for my mid-sized Buzz figures.
