This is another one of those mixed-review toys. On the one hand, the Buzz Lightyear Deluxe Action Wing Pack is amazing, and incredibly cool. When it works. On the other hand, there are many complaints about it.
For looks, fun, and playability, it just doesn’t get much better than this. You get a motorized set of wings that attach to a chestplate with controls. The wings actually open, and close, by pushing the large red button on the chestplate. That alone is fabulous, but the fun doesn’t stop there. It also flashes lights, has sound effects, and speaks a Buzz Lightyear phrase when opening and closing. When tipped horizontally, the wings have a sensor that turns on flying sounds. The 3 smaller buttons have no function, they’re strictly cosmetic. The big red wing-control button is the only functional control. It does take 4 AA batteries to run the motors, sounds, and lights.
This is a great accessory to the Buzz Lightyear costume, or as a standalone toy. Children’s imaginations will run wild (and so will they)! Since we all know doors and wings in the up position are a bad idea, these come with a hingepoint that allows the wings to bend backwards rather than break. The manufacturer description includes a disclaimer… “Wings will not actually help you fly. Use responsibly.” Sounds silly, but I think a toy like this should come with a safety lecture by an adult. You may not remember this, but back in the days of the old black and white Superman series, there was a rash of kids jumping off roofs, trying to be Superman. So, with that in mind, I think a safety reminder is good.
So, on the good side, these wings are colorful, have the correct Buzz Lightyear look and feel, and some very cool extra features.
Now for the other half. Out of over 60 reviews, 45 rated it good to excellent. Of the negative customer reviews, most of them were simply that it wore out too soon, especially the motorized parts. That’s not so bad, by the numbers. But two reviews mentioned a short in the battery pack that caused overheating in one case, and smoke coming from the unit in the other case. Can 4 AA’s generate enough heat to make a fire hazard? Would smoke from an internal short cause an actual fire? I don’t know.
What I DO know, is this toy is very cool, and most people have no problems from it. IF I was going to spend the money (and yes, it’s expensive) I would be sure to supervise my child while playing, and remove the batteries when done. With those precautions, I would be inclined to approve of this toy on a probationary basis.
