PeachTree Playthings Buzz and Woody Poster – My 69 cent Treasure

Buzz Lightyear and Woody PosterIt’s been a long time since I’ve posted here.  Haven’t given up on Buzz, just ran out of time in the daily grind.  Keep hoping to re-prioritize, but you know how that goes.  Today was different.  My job at the paper is full time now (as with so many things, that’s good and bad, depending) and I actually get a lunch break.  So today, went home for lunch like usual.  Made one of my favorite meals, cottage cheese with grapes and bananas.

Sat down at the computer to eat and play a little.  Then Mom came home.  She’d been out.  Running errands, shopping, just going about her usual Friday stuff.  She unlocked the door, came into the living room, walked down the hall, and when she turned the corner into our room… she had this great Buzz Lightyear and Woody poster!

Gotta love her!!!  She knows how much I enjoy Toy Story and Buzz Lightyear.  This poster is maybe 18″ x 12″, and made out of a thin plastic.  The images are form-shaped, and follow the contours of the characters.  It has some aging, and a little wear, but is in perfectly useable condition.  The art is Disney-accurate.  Correct colors, proportions, facial expressions.  It was made by Peachtree Playthings.  This was probably a promo poster for a toy display somewhere.  I’m just glad it’s mine now!

She found it at the Salvation Army for .69 cents…  I told her what’s important is not how much the poster cost, it’s how much the poster is worth.  To me, it was really awesome.  My first thought was to add it to the Buzz Lightyear display cabinet out in the exercise room.  But Monique and Mom both took note that Buzz (and Woody) will fit on the wall just behind my digital piano.  So without even having to be devious about it, I get to hang my new poster on the wall right by the Marvel PVC figurine collection!

For now, it’s just … up there.  Propped on top of the piano.  Later, I may frame or matte it.  Either way, it’s a great and unique Buzz Lightyear wall display.

Buzz Lightyear Toy Story Villains Figurine Playset

Buzz Lightyear, Disney, Fisher-Price, Imaginext, Toy Story  Comments Off on Buzz Lightyear Toy Story Villains Figurine Playset
Feb 112013

I wound up opening the package after all. I know, I’m a big kid! (Click for Amazon Link)

This is a pretty unusual set for me. On more than one count. First, my collection is almost exclusively good guys. Yet here’s Buzz included  in a Villain’s set of figurines. It kind of hurts my feelings to find Buzz cast as a villain. After all, he didn’t KNOW he was joining the villains. They seemed so nice at first.

I typically only collect Buzz Lightyear. But when a whole set drops into my lap, and Buzz is one of the set characters, I’m not going to turn it down. Though I really tried this time. Monique and I had an opportunity to buy several random sets of Disney and Marvel characters for our eBay business. It was fully my intention to ‘be good’, and sell these.
That intention faded away when it was time to take pictures for the listings. A bird in the hand is worth more… or maybe a Buzz Lightyear in the set is worth more than an unsold listing on eBay.

The entire set contains Buzz Lightyear, Lots-O’-Huggins Bear, Big Baby, Twitch, Chunk, Stretch, and Sparks. The packaging is nice enough to display as is. No need to remove the characters from the box.

These are not toys, strictly speaking. They’re figurines. Small PVC characters, around 3.5 inches tall. No joints, no articulation, no movement. They make great display pieces. Excellent cake toppers. Decent toys. Just understand up front, they’re strictly figurines.

Quality is good. The painting is clean and simple, the colors just right for the characters. The villains are nicely represented, though of course my emphasis is on Buzz. The painting and the sculpt do a good job capturing his character. His colors lean toward ‘pastel’. I prefer bolder colors personally, but that’s just a minor note.

If you’re like me and prefer Buzz, this set might not be to your taste. But if you want a unique collection of Toy Story characters, this hits the spot. Buzz Lightyear in a villains collection. That makes it different enough to justify keeping the whole set.

Given how nicely they’re packaged, the whole set will go well as is. I may take off the top plastic bubble. Or not. It depends on whether my goal is to see them clearly, or keep dust off them.  (Edit:  I wound up opening the package to take a clearer picture.  For dust protection, I can leave the cover back on, though.)

Either way, as PVC collectible Toy Story figures, this is a great set.

Buzz Lightyear Birthday Candle: Wilton Toy Story Candle Set 2811-7770

Birthday Candles, Buzz, Toy Story, Wilton  Comments Off on Buzz Lightyear Birthday Candle: Wilton Toy Story Candle Set 2811-7770
Sep 212012

Another really cool Toy Story party favor.  This one is a Buzz Lightyear candle standing slightly over 3″ tall.  His colors are a bit on the pastel side, not nearly as bright as normally portrayed.  But They’re nicely done, in a ‘toned-down’ sort of way.  The candles are hand-painted, which appeals to me.  For an inexpensive, mass-produced, hand-painted candle, the features are great.
I might not accept the paint job in a more expensive toy, but for a candle that’s (most likely) going to light up someone’s birthday cake, the quality is very acceptable.  The proportions are good, the detailing fine (again, considering this is made of wax and expected to be burned).  They did an excellent job capturing Buzz’s personality.
The flat base means he stands well on his own.  It also means he’s going to pull the frosting off the cake when it’s time to remove him.  If that matters to you, I’d recommend getting 4 candles, and mounting one at each corner of the cake, but not actually on the cake.  (It’s a round cake?  Just imagine the corners are there…)
Personally, I’d like that.  A square or rectangular sheet cake, possibly multi-layered tiers .  A Buzz candle at each corner, and maybe some small (like the Buddy Packs) Toy Story figures on the edges of the tiers.  I could really get into this!
Actually, my sister-in-law did a cake for me when I turned 50, that was similar.  But far more personalized.  She actually sculpted many of my favorite super-heroes out of fondant, and built them onto the cake.  One of the figures was her own personal creation of me, if I was a super-hero!  It meant a lot to me.  Enough that I preserved all the figures I could in a clear block of lucite.  Turned out great… except the Hulk’s toes stick out a little bit.  For the whole story, (and incriminating pictures), feel free to click on the link and see my 50th birthday cake.
As far as the Toy Story birthday candle, I would enjoy seeing them at my next party…  :^)

Buzz Lightyear (Disney Pixar Toy Story 3) Life-Size Standup Poster , 27×48

Buzz, Disney, Disney / Pixar TS3, Toy Story  Comments Off on Buzz Lightyear (Disney Pixar Toy Story 3) Life-Size Standup Poster , 27×48

I remember these fondly.  I worked for Blockbuster video for years (well over a decade) and we used to get all kinds of cool standees for new releases coming out.  I’ve owned two of the original theatrical Buzz Lightyears.  One of them actually had blinking lights on Buzz Lightyear’s wings.  Those were far too large for home use, and I wound up passing them along to someone else.
Buzz’s colors are vivid, his pose is pure Buzz Lightyear.  If I was afraid of the dark, having Buzz stand guard at night would make me feel much safer!!  (Though one review said his child was actually afraid of it…)  This Buzz Lightyear standee is, obviously, 27″ x 48″.  The proportions aren’t specified, but since he’s not shown with his wings out, it looks safe to assume he’s taller than he is wide.  When ordering, if you price around, watch out for the height.  Not all Buzz standees are full height, even if they say ‘life size’.  Some claim ‘life size’, but are actually closer to 3 feet tall.
Typically, if you’re not familiar with them, standees are made of sturdy cardboard, and have an extended piece in back to make them stand on their own.  They can easily be leaned up against a wall as well.  I’ve used double-sticky tape to attach mine to the wall.
From my own experience, I’d recommend placement away from traffic areas.  My son (and myself as well) has been known to knock our standees over.  Being only cardboard, it doesn’t take that kind of treatment very well.
I’m not completely sure these are suitable for small children (not if you want the standee to last) unless you have a safe place to stand them.  They make a great theme backdrop for a Buzz Lightyear display collection.

Toy Story – Buzz Lightyear Alternative Adult Costume Kit

Buzz, Costume, Disguise, Disney, Disney/Pixars Toy Story, Disquise, Pixar, Toy Story  Comments Off on Toy Story – Buzz Lightyear Alternative Adult Costume Kit

This is a great costume accessory, but be very clear… The Toy Story Buzz Lightyear Disguise Accessory Kit is NOT an entire costume.  As the (rather long) title states, it’s a costume accessory kit.  You get the purple hood, with circular ear panels to mimic a spaceman’s hood liner.  You get Buzz Lightyear gloves. And you get a 43″ wide inflatable Buzz Jetpack.  The inflatable jetpack is nicely designed to mimic Buzz’s jetpack.
These are all great accessories, but I can’t stress enough… the actual costume is NOT included!
I already have a Buzz Lightyear t-shirt,  if I buy this hood/glove/jetpack kit, All I’d need are some appropriate pants!  I haven’t done Halloween in a number of years, but if I could gear up with this, I’d be hitting the neighborhood streets with my candy bag!  (At least I wouldn’t be running through the streets making whooshing noises…)
I do like this Buzz Lightyear costume kit.  A lot.  That being said, it would have been nice if they’d included boots.  Too bad, but what you get for your money is a good deal and a great way to make your already existing Buzz costume stand out a little bit better.

Toy Story Buzz Lightyear Astronaut Costume White Adult T-shirt Tee Medium

BuzzLightyearTshirt
If you’re a fan of themed T-Shirts, (and Buzz Lightyear of course!) then this is a wonderful addition to your collection.  Made of cotton, and officially licensed by Disney, this Toy Story themed t-shirt is fun for any age. Available in a number of sizes in Toddler and Adults.  I love the cleverness… it’s not just a ‘character’ shirt, with an image on the front.  It’s a wearable t-shirt of Buzz’s upper torso armor, putting your child (or you…) in official Star Command uniform.
Mine was a gift, so it may not be exactly the same as this one.  Close enough to get the idea, though.  There are currently 3 reviews online for it; one person rated it low and said the colors faded too much in the first washing.  To counter that, the other 2 reviews give it a 5-star rating, and praise it highly.
I’ve had mine since Christmas 2011, and I do wear it quite often…  this is one of my favorite shirts!
Note:  Styles change occasionally.  Be sure to look at the actual image when ordering!

Monique has done it again- she went to a nearby yard sale this morning while I was still sleeping.  When she got back, I was barely aware of her climbing back into bed.  I rolled over, and heard a humming noise.  Opened one eye, to see her gleefully holding a spinning Buzz Lightyear toy over my head!  His wings and upper torso spins on a flashlight-like handle.  The wingtips light up. A simple push-button controls on/off.

I can remember years ago, when working at Blockbuster video, we used to sell this particular Buzz Lightyear, but we sold out before I bought one.  Can’t remember the price, but it seemed reasonable at the time.  He’s hard (or maybe impossible) to find any more.  Unless I’m looking for the wrong title.  Searched Amazon, eBay, and Google without finding any like him.

Buzz has obviously seen combat with young children.  Puts me in mind of the day-care scene in Toy Story III.  But he still spins, and his lights still light up.  Now that he’s been rescued from the yard sale table, he’ll be joining my other Buzz Lightyear toys.  If anybody knows where to find Spinning Buzz for sale, let me know and I’ll share the link.  For now, it looks like he’s a highly-collectible, one-of-a-kind treasured memento of days gone by…   :^)

If a source turns up, I’ll post the link here.

Buzz was spinning while I took the picture, so you can see a light trail on the right.

Toy Story Buzz Lightyear Embossed Metal Lunch Box

Jul 302012

Toy Story Embossed Metal Lunch Box

Click the pic to see at Amazon

Once again, having a reputation as a Buzz Lightyear fan has paid off.  My son and his wife came to visit me recently.  It was sort of a belated birthday get-together, and they came bearing cool gifts.  In a creative move, they used a Toy Story 2 Buzz Lightyear metal lunchbox as a container for some of the other gifts.
When I opened the gift wrapping, there was my excellent new Buzz Lightyear lunchbox!  All by itself, that would have been great… but since the lunch box seemed heavier than it should have been, I opened it up and found an Indiana Jones T-shirt and a very high-tech watch as well.  Kind of a triple-threat gift.

If you’re thinking of the old-time metal school lunch boxes, it’s not quite the same.  First off, the new breed of lunchbox is smaller- about 6″ x 7 1/2″ x 2 3/4″.  There’s also no thermos inside.  I see these as being more like a collectible lunchbox than an actual meant-for-use box.  If you like, they can still carry food, but mine’s going on display with my Buzz Lightyear collection.  It’ll make a cool backdrop for some of my smaller and medium Buzz Lightyear figures.

Another point to note; the lunch box is embossed on one side, and smooth on the other.  The handle is a shaped plastic grip (a bit too small for my adult hands), with a Toy Story sticker lining the grip inset.  While licensed by Disney, it’s produced by the Tin Box Co.

This being a licensed product, the side art is spot-on perfect and the quality is exactly as it should be.  It’ll be great as a display item.  Like I mentioned, I’ll arrange some of my smaller Buzz figures around it like a small diorama.  Below is a pic showing my Buzz lunch box as it currently stands in the collection.  It’ll probably be moved around a bit until it’s just right.

This is an excellent addition to my collection, and I can happily recommend it to other Buzz Lightyear or metal lunchbox fans!

Disney Ultimate Buzz Lightyear Talking Action Figure — 12″

Toy Story  Comments Off on Disney Ultimate Buzz Lightyear Talking Action Figure — 12″
Feb 042012

No.  Just… don’t do it.  This Buzz has serious issues.  While I was researching him, I noticed something odd about his customer reviews.  5 of the 31 high-scoring reviews were ‘salted’ by the same reviewer.  If you take out the duplicate reviews, his customer rating average would go down from 3 1/2 stars to 2 1/2 stars.  This had to have been done either by a loyal child trying to boost his favorite toy in the ratings… or by a questionable seller trying to raise his scores.

Either way, bad result.  When you look at the high number of complaints, several other things jump out.  To begin with, the Product Description on Amazon claims “This is the quintessential, classic, truly original Talking Buzz Lightyear…”  blah blah blah.  Lies.  I have the truly original Buzz Lightyear, the first one ever released, and this is in NO way close to him.  After all the years, and no battery installed (for his protection), I may have forgotten some details, such as how many sayings he has (this Buzz only has 5), but I know for a fact his front chest button is supposed to trigger the wings.

As a matter of fact, I’ll go so far as to say, I have never before seen a 12″ Buzz Lightyear that does NOT trigger the wings from the big red button on his chest.

If you read the customer reviews, they uniformly state this Buzz does NOT trigger from the front chest button.  Instead, he has a button ON HIS BACK that opens the wings!

Many reviews, even the positive ones, mention how easy he is to break.  Quite a few complain of recieving Buzz used, not new… damaged, and dirty.  One in particular said Buzz had been stuffed in a clear bag and closed with a garbage tie.

In all fairness, I do have to defend him on two points.  First of all, the paint scheme.  I have seen legitimate Buzz Lightyears with a slightly darker skin tone.  Probably just the occasional random variation in the factory.  Same with the gloves, the all-white/gray gloves are a legitimate variation.  Second, the wings popping out horizontally.  Originally, this was the ONLY way a 12″ Full-size Buzz could be found.  For a number of years, there were no other options.  Having a Buzz Lightyear with true movie-accurate wings is a relatively recent occurence.  (At least, in the 12″ toy.  I have some smaller early Buzz toys with more accurate wings.)

Still, the complaints and reviews, and just plain “padding” by the reviewer who goes by “A Kid’s Review.”  He has no link to see his other reviews.  I tried to report the duplicate reviews to Amazon, but only got a generic “This is abuse” link.  Sent it anyway, maybe they’ll figure it out.

Also, the product details claim he has a “voice sampler”.  This is inaccurate.  I think what they meant, was that he speaks with a digitized voice.  A sampler is something different, and there are no indications that this Buzz can sample and repeat voices.

One final quibble- At this point in time, Disney Ultimate Buzz Lightyear Talking Action Figure — 12″ (to give him his full title) costs $32.95.  For such a low-end Buzz, that’s just way, way overpriced.

Final thoughts:  There are several Buzz Lightyears claiming the title of “Ultimate.”  I own two of them myself.  But this Buzz is NOT, in any way, shape, or form, an “Ultimate” Buzz.  I strongly recommend you pick another Buzz.  This one just has too many warning flags to take a chance on.

Toy Story Backyard Deluxe Electronic Buzz LightYear

Toy Story  Comments Off on Toy Story Backyard Deluxe Electronic Buzz LightYear
Feb 032012

Toy Story Backyard Deluxe Electronic Buzz Lightyear.   Hmmm…

This Buzz has some good things, and some bad things.  On the good side, he’s full-sized, says some different-from-the-usual phrases, and comes with a compass that Buzz can wear.  (The compass can be worn by the “playee”, as well.)  He looks good, pretty standard design for a full-sized Buzz. Joints move as normal, helmet can be opened and closed.

The best thing about Backyard Buzz?  He’s durable.  Over and over, customer reviews highlight the rough-housing he goes through, and survives with flying colors.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen this many customer reviews raving about his durability.

On the bad side…  Let’s start with the obvious:  Change a few phrases, include a (working) toy compass, and you’ve got a whole new Buzz…  Backyard Buzz Lightyear…   Well, no.  I don’t think there’s enough difference here, or enough sophisticated electronics, to justify his nearly $40 price tag.

I’ve paid that much and more for Buzz, it’s not completely a matter of price.  It’s a matter of, this Buzz should be in the ‘under-$30’ price bracket, and that’s being generous.

Also is the voice.  Usually, if he comes with authentic voice, the description will say “the Real Buzz Lightyear’s voice”.  This one does not, leading me to wonder about the voice.  On the other side, one reviewer stated that he says quotes from the movies, so in this case, he… probably… has the real voice, since it’s easier to digitize existing audio than to hire someone to re-voice something.

Something to think about:  On the Amazon vendor description, it describes the item weight as 3 pounds, and the shipping weight as 1.8 pounds.  It’s been a long time since I went to school, but I’m pretty sure if he starts at 3 pounds, he’s not going to weigh LESS after being packed for shipping.

One more thing to consider, and this can be good or bad, depending on viewpoint.  Backyard Buzz has NO wings.  Again, for this price, wings ought to be included, but they’re not.  I will give him some benefit of the doubt for being wingless; doubtless it contributes to his toughness.  If he had wings, they probably wouldn’t survive rough treatment quite as well as he does.

Final thoughts:  I like Backyard Buzz for his ability to survive.  That almost counterbalances the negatives.  (And if you’re shopping for a hard-playing child, maybe it does.)   But no wings, and very limited features, make this Buzz way overpriced.  He’d need to be about half that price before I’d spend money on him.
