Toy Story Buzz Lightyear Cosmic Blaster

It’s not often that I find a bad Buzz Lightyear toy.  Really hate when that happens.  In this case, they’ve got a cool idea… a toy pistol just like Buzz’s laser from his Star Command cartoons.  It fires soft darts, seems like a really fun toy.  But a quick look at the customer review score shows big trouble.  Down the list, over and over, broken, broken, broken, won’t work, broken, broken…  There are a very small number of happy parents, but a huge percentage have nothing but complaints.  Many of them tried twice before giving up, so you can double the bad reviews.  One parent reported her son caught his fingers in the mechanism.  Several reports of the toy falling apart, battery box coming off, safety foam ripped off the projectile.

There’s not much point in going further.  Even the positive reviews report safety issues.  This toy needs some serious revamping before I’d let a child play with it.

First off, it needs to use better parts, and better construction.  Second, it should place the internal working parts out of reach of small fingers.  And finally, the projectiles should be entirely made of soft foam, like Nerf toys are.  As a company, I like Mattel a lot.  Their customer service is remarkable.  But this toy is a fail.  Somebody dropped the ball at quality control when they approved this model.

Final thoughts:  Nope.  Don’t waste your money.  If you have a young star commander in need of a space pistol, try this one instead:  Toy Story 3 Buzz Lightyear Space Shooter

Toy Story 3 Deluxe Talking Buzz Figure

Mattel  Comments Off on Toy Story 3 Deluxe Talking Buzz Figure
Feb 192012

The Toy Story 3 Deluxe Talking Buzz Figure is a major departure from Buzz Lightyear’s normal sculpt.  With a blockier build and more cartoony look, he’s got his pros and cons.  I do like the size- at 6 inches tall, he’s a good size for toddlers, and a nice mid-range size for collectors wanting to balance their display.  The cartoony look seems more child-friendly, as does the overall design.

For his size, he has a nice feature set; speaks a few phrases (3 to 5), is minimally poseable.  The product description says “fully articulated”.  I disagree.  If you look closely at the joints, his movement is limited.  It’s decent, for a mid-sized Buzz, but definitely not to the level of the average 12″ Buzz.  The voice is activated by the round red button.

The wings come off, and battery access is beneath the wings.  This is part of the pro/con I mentioned.  The wings will pop off, rather than break.  That’s good.  But it also makes them easier to misplace.  Another plus/minus is the helmet, which does NOT open or close.  This could be mildly disappointing to a child, but it’s also safer for a toddler.

I’m a bit of a purist, and usually prefer my Buzz Lightyears to look accurate, but this design works nicely.  Even with the changes in head and overall proportions, he still has the “Buzz Lightyear / Toy Story” feel.  They did a good job keeping his essence true to character.

Customer reviews are overwhelmingly high, at 4 or 5 stars.  The one single exception was due to price.  As always, it pays to do your research before buying.  (But then, that’s why you’re here reading this, right?)   :^)

Final thoughts:  Well-done figure, imaginative approach.  On a personal basis, I quite like him, and wouldn’t mind adding him to my collection.  Compared to the normal heavy 12″ figure, this Buzz is more durable, and easier to carry around.  Very suitable for toddlers.

Toy Story Woody and Buzz Lightyear Figure 2-Pack

Mattel  Comments Off on Toy Story Woody and Buzz Lightyear Figure 2-Pack
Feb 162012

Update:  I got a specific answer from Mattel a few minutes ago.  For the final details on Buzz and Woody, see below (just under the email from Amazon)

Toy Story Woody and Buzz Lightyear Figure 2-Pack differ from the Buddy Packs.  Buddy Packs feature small (Usually 3 to 4 inches tall) pairs of figures.  The Woody and Buzz 2-pack offers a much larger scale, at least according to the product description.  There are discrepancies between the descriptions and the customer reviews that make me think they aren’t all talking about the same thing.  For instance, one customer says they’re ‘small’.  Yet, the product dimensions are “12 x 3 x 10 inches”.  That’s not small.  Especially for what amounts to static figures.  On the other hand, it’s pretty darn rare for a larger item to be non-articulated.  On top of that, the price is just under $30.

It gets even more confusing:  Sears offers the same set for $83.  Plus, one of the customers mentioned that he “didn’t expect much for that price”…  For nearly $30?  For $80?  I’d expect some electronics, some movement, maybe wings and a laser.

Lots of mixed signals.  Are the figures large, small, articulated, not?  So I sent an email to Amazon.  That in itself wasn’t easy.  Lots of confusion, and all the ‘contact seller’ options just said to contact Amazon.  Turns out the seller is actually a subsidiary of Amazon.  Here’s the email I sent to Amazon Customer Service:

“Hi, I’m trying to find out about the  Toy Story Woody and Buzz Lightyear Figure 2-Pack.

The product description lists this at 12 x 3 x 10 inches, yet some customer reviews refer to it as small?
Also I see references to Woody being poseable, but Buzz is either not articulated, or only minimally so.  Exactly how ‘moveable’ is Buzz and Woody?
Last question:  The price is $27.06, yet someone stated “didn’t expect much for that price”. Are the reviews all talking about the same set?  Has the price changed drastically because of availability?”

I got a reply quickly. Not really an answer, just a reply.  Judge for yourself:

“Hello, Thanks for writing to us at Amazon.com. I understand that you’d like to know about the “Toy Story Woody and Buzz Lightyear Figure 2-Pack”.

I’ve checked the toy on our website and see that the size of the toy is listed as 12 x 3 x 10 inches. Unfortunately, I don’t have any more information about the toy; all of the information available is displayed on the item’s product detail page.

You can contact the manufacturer directly for more information about the toy. Here’s their contact information:

Manufacturer name : Mattel

Phone: 800-524-8697

In regard to the price, I see that this toy is available from Amazon.com warehouse deals, the prices associated with Warehouse Deals items are as unique as the products Warehouse Deals offers. As a result, we aren’t able to comment on the prices they offer. Warehouse Deals items are unique I hope this helps. We look forward to seeing you again soon. Thank you for your inquiry. Did I solve your problem? “

So, I’m going to contact Mattel, and update here with the result.  Hopefully all will be clear soon.

I just got off the phone talking to a Mattel representative.  Wow, they are soooo nice!  The lady I talked with had to physically walk somewhere else because her computer did not have the answers… and twice, she went and found the answers for me.  It was a great pleasure to talk with a real person who actually sounded glad to take time and help.

So… here’s the details:  The PACKAGING is about 10″ tall.  The figures within are around 5 to 6 inches tall.  That explains a lot of the discrepancies between product description and customer reviews.  Woody is poseable.  Buzz is not poseable, but if you squeeze his legs together, a laser pops out.  Neither one has any electronics.  No voices, no battery-driven features.

Again:  5 to 6″ tall.  Woody poseable.  Buzz not poseable, but has a pressure-triggered hidden laser.  No other features.

Final thoughts:  (Rewrote this part after talking with Mattel.)  Based on the final information, I like this set a lot.  The Woody and Buzz Lightyear Figure 2-Pack seems to have decent playability, and a good small-to-mid size for display in my collection.  I do NOT like the current price, but with any luck, as time passes, the price may go down.  If I could get it at a decent price, I’d be glad to have this set.

Toy Story Rocket Running Buzz Lightyear

Mattel  Comments Off on Toy Story Rocket Running Buzz Lightyear
Feb 142012

Toy Story Rocket Running Buzz Lightyear might be one those ideas that sound better than it actually is.  Hate to say that.  Buzz Lightyear looks very cool strapped to his rocket.  You pull the string to rev him up, he says ‘Buzz Lightyear’ sayings, and runs for up to 10 feet.  He swivels left and right at the hips.  Based on the clear flywheel, plus the way his feet are attached at an offset, I have to assume that when he’s removed from the box, his feet will spin round and round in a running motion.

Buzz measures 11 x 3 x 10 inches, roughly.  As far as appearances, I’d give him a 9 out of 10. His sculpt, character, colors, and design are visually appealing.

He looks really cool, and I would have truly expected this to be a great toy.  However, I can only find 3 customer reviews on the entire web, and none of them are good.  One from Amazon complained that it arrived broken.  Okay, out of a sampling of… 1 …it’s really hard to make an overall judgement.  But over at Toys “R” Us, where I found the other two reviews, it’s not much better.  One complains that Rocket Running Buzz can’t stay standing, even when adults try, and that his child lost interest in minutes.  The other mentions that the parts are hard to move, it’s hard for children to pull the string and keep him balanced, and that Buzz is permanently attached to the rocket, so can’t be taken seperately and played with.

I’ll easily admit, 3 reviews are hardly definitive.  Especially when a toy arrives broken, it’s unfair to judge a toy by one person’s experience.  But the difficulty in making him stay upright, and the fact that he can’t be taken apart from the rocket for just plain old ‘playing’…  that has to be considered when buying a toy.

Final thoughts:  I’d have to say “No” to this one.  For a collector’s display (like mine) he might make an interesting addition.  But as a toy, he just doesn’t seem very playable.

The video below shows how he works while still boxed.  To give him at least SOME credit, his feet probably circle around in a running motion when he’s unboxed.

Toy Story 3 Buzz Lightyear Mission Pack

Mattel  Comments Off on Toy Story 3 Buzz Lightyear Mission Pack
Feb 132012

The Buzz Lightyear Mission Pack is a nice collection of 3 Buzz Lightyear role-play toys.  Works equally well as a stand-alone set of toys, or as a costume add-on for a full Buzz Lightyear outfit.

Comes with a Utility belt (like Buzz’s antigrav belt), Space Scope, and Disc Launcher.  The utility belt is strictly cosmetic.  It may be a bit large for some younger children, but can easily have another hole punched in to make a better fit.

The Space Scope is neat, with a red clear plastic flip-up shield to help identify aliens.  The gun shoots small plastic discs, and comes with 3 to fire.  Small warning here, these are hard plastic.  Some saftety rules should be set before issuing this to any young space ranger.

Final thoughts:  Whether you need a costume accessory, or just the toys own their own, this is a fun set.  Required wear for all galaxy protectors.

Toy Story 3 Buzz Lightyear Deluxe Action Wing Pack

Mattel  Comments Off on Toy Story 3 Buzz Lightyear Deluxe Action Wing Pack
Jan 302012

This is another one of those mixed-review toys.  On the one hand, the Buzz Lightyear Deluxe Action Wing Pack is amazing, and incredibly cool.  When it works.  On the other hand, there are many complaints about it.

For looks, fun, and playability, it just doesn’t get much better than this.  You get a motorized set of wings that attach to a chestplate with controls.  The wings actually open, and close, by pushing the large red button on the chestplate.  That alone is fabulous, but the fun doesn’t stop there.  It also flashes lights, has sound effects, and speaks a Buzz Lightyear phrase when opening and closing.  When tipped horizontally, the wings have a sensor that turns on flying sounds. The 3 smaller buttons have no function, they’re strictly cosmetic.  The big red wing-control button is the only functional control.  It does take 4 AA batteries to run the motors, sounds, and lights.

This is a great accessory to the Buzz Lightyear costume, or as a standalone toy.  Children’s imaginations will run wild (and so will they)!  Since we all know doors and wings in the up position are a bad idea, these come with a hingepoint that allows the wings to bend backwards rather than break.  The manufacturer description includes a disclaimer… “Wings will not actually help you fly. Use responsibly.”  Sounds silly, but I think a toy like this should come with a safety lecture by an adult.  You may not remember this, but back in the days of the old black and white Superman series, there was a rash of kids jumping off roofs, trying to be Superman.  So, with that in mind, I think a safety reminder is good.

So, on the good side, these wings are colorful, have the correct Buzz Lightyear look and feel, and some very cool extra features.

Now for the other half.  Out of over 60 reviews, 45 rated it good to excellent.  Of the negative customer reviews, most of them were simply that it wore out too soon, especially the motorized parts.  That’s not so bad, by the numbers.  But two reviews mentioned a short in the battery pack that caused overheating in one case, and smoke coming from the unit in the other case.  Can 4 AA’s generate enough heat to make a fire hazard?  Would smoke from an internal short cause an actual fire?  I don’t know.

What I DO know, is this toy is very cool, and most people have no problems from it.  IF I was going to spend the money (and yes, it’s expensive) I would be sure to supervise my child while playing, and remove the batteries when done.  With those precautions, I would be inclined to approve of this toy on a probationary basis.

Toy Story Buzz Lightyear Spaceship CommAnd Center

Mattel  Comments Off on Toy Story Buzz Lightyear Spaceship CommAnd Center
Jan 292012

The Buzz Lightyear Spaceship Command Center… exactly what every young Star Commander needs to patrol the galaxy.  This is a cool space ship, kind of a mobile play environment to give Buzz Lightyear and friends a structure for their adventures.  Sturdy design, with moving pieces able to ‘pop off’, rather than break.  This is a pretty cool option, because I’d much rather reassemble than repair!  Measuring 20″ x 5 1/2″ x 15″, the Command Center weighs in at nearly 4 pounds.

Just to be clear up front… there are NO figures that come with it.  You’ll have to get them separately. The Toy Story Space series of figures are often recommended for it.  But if you’ve shopped around, you know they are very pricy right now. (Buzz and Woody go for over $60!)  So it’s nice that Mattel has confirmed, any standard 6″ character will work with the set.  Heck, it doesn’t even have to be Buzz Lightyear.  As long as it’s a basic 6″ action figure.

Remember Toy Story, the first movie?  Buzz’s ‘Space Ship’ was the box he comes in?  The Space Ship Command Center is based on that design.  With some awesome additions.  To begin with, it comes with a small Space Rover vehicle.  Just big enough for the 6″ Buzz Lightyear to stand on.  The Rover has a small ‘charging facility’ where it can be plugged in and charged (or gassed) up.  Maybe it runs on Crystallic Fusion.

As a space ship, Buzz commands from the pilot’s chair.  After arrival planetside, the ship can roll on small wheels, or stand vertically, and the doors open to convert into the command center.  There are buttons to push for lights, sounds, and voice.  But the most exciting feature is the microphone.  Speak into the mic, and your voice is amplified.  Wonderful fun for kids back as ‘mission command’ giving Buzz his marching orders.

The areas are divided up by function.  At the top is Buzz’s observation chamber.  Beneath that is the mission launch center.  To the left is the Space Rover maintenance and storage room, and to the right is the prison (to keep Zurg safely behind bars).  Above the prison room is a trap door.  Once Zurg is standing on it, he’s as good as caught.

The product description talks about firing projectiles, but that is actually in reference to the Toy Story Space Mission figures.  Buzz Lightyear and Zurg both come with guns that shoot a simple plastic projectile.  Again, remember these figures must be bought separately.  The video below shows the Buzz Lightyear Spaceship Command Center, plus the Buzz and Zurg figures I’ve mentioned.  I love this video, and think maybe Dad is having as much fun as the young reviewer.

The customer reviews are excellent, with most rating it a 4- or 5-star toy.  Of the few who rated it lower, the only two complaints I see were price, and durability.  Both of which I think were misunderstandings.  Price now is a reasonable mid $20 range.  Right before Christmas, retailers ran out, and the only available ones were through 3-rd party resellers.  Under those circumstances, prices went as high as $70.  But dropped again once availability returned.

The durability issue is the same.  The toy is designed to pop off when too much pressure is applied to hinges and moving parts.  Kids get excited.  It’s in a child’s nature to break toys.  This is a brilliant concept.  Instead of breaking something for good, it just snaps back into place.  Sure, it might be a pain constantly having to do so.  But isn’t that much better than facing a child’s disappointment because their toy really broke?  I’ve seen this trend with several larger Buzz Lightyears recently, and applaud Disney for the forsight this shows.

Final thoughts:  Worth it?  Heck, yeah!!  For $25, you get a durable toy with plenty of options, and adds a whole new level of playability to the Toy Story figures.  And for the collectors?  Yep.  I’d love to use it as a display base for my mid-sized Buzz figures.

Toy Story Space Buzz Lightyear Figure

Mattel  Comments Off on Toy Story Space Buzz Lightyear Figure
Jan 272012

Mixed feelings about this one.  Buzz has a brand new costume, part of the Toy Story Space lineup of figures.  I like the looks.  As great as the traditional suit is, an occasional variation can be a lot of fun.  Especially when it’s an excellent design.

With Toy Story Space Buzz, all the normal white space has been changed to black.  There seems to be no other color change.  He’s at that mid-range size, just under 6 inches tall.  One of the nicer parts of this figure is his articulation.  His shoulders, hips, elbow, and knees are moveable.  At this size, normally the articulation is less.  He comes with helmet in the ‘open’ position.  It does not move.  Seems kind of odd, if this is the ‘Space’ series, you’d think he’d need his helmet to close.

As far as extras, he comes with a (relatively) large gun that fires a single plastic missile.  Other than that, his bonus features are sparse to none.  No voice.  No laser sounds.  No wings.  Don’t be too upset, that’s pretty normal for this size.  He makes a great display piece.  Actually, his better-than-average articulation (for a mid-size) and durability make this Buzz a pretty good choice as a toy.  Just remember, he’s a basic action figure.  No big flashy features.

Up to this point, all is well, and I’m loving Space Buzz.  But here’s the sticking point:  At this moment, his price is $61.99.

Notice where the decimal point is?  Sixty-plus dollars?  His original retail price was more like $10.  What happened?

So I puttered around the internet a bit.  Checked ebay.  Apparently, this little guy is very hard to get.  He’s either right around $60, or he’s not available.  Every site I could find with the original retail price listed him as no longer available.

Maybe this will change in the future.  But for now, I would have to think VERY seriously before shelling that much money out.  Sure, he’s nicely done.  But for that kind of money, you can get a full-size Buzz with all the bells and whistles.

So, final thoughts?  Don’t do it.  Not unless you really, truly, need this to complete a set.  Go to garage sales.  Check out flea markets.  Otherwise, the money could be better spent on a different Buzz.

Just to give you the idea, this video shows Buzz.  At one point, the reviewer has a short for-fun video of an adventure the toys have.  Remember, that’s voice-over.  Not the actual toy speaking.  :^)

Disney / Pixar Toy Story 3 Deluxe Action Figure Spin Kicking Buzz Lightyear

Mattel  Comments Off on Disney / Pixar Toy Story 3 Deluxe Action Figure Spin Kicking Buzz Lightyear
Jan 172012

I present Spin Kicking Buzz with some trepidation.  He’s either new, or no longer available after current stocks run out.  In an effort to learn more about him, especially how his spin kick functions, I’ve discovered… no youtube videos.  No detailed photos.  No hands-on descriptions.  Many websites I visited had him removed from their sites, with phrases like “no longer available”.

What does all this mean?  Your guess is as good as mine.  Either too new to be widely available… or a limited production run that’s no longer being made. Or even a first-run new toy that’s quickly sold out before the next production run is available.  That’s what I’m hoping for, because he looks very nice, and so does the blister pack he comes in.  A Buzz Lightyear that kicks is something I don’t yet have, he’d make a nice addition to the collection.

In the meantime, what I do know is that he’s about 6″ tall, articulated (by how much seems open for debate), and when you push a button on his back, he kicks out with his right leg.  His proportions look traditional.  He has a jetpack, but it doesn’t look like the wings extend.  Can’t be sure, but the one image showing the back looked like there were no actual wings.

My take?  He’s cool, and I want one.

Toy Story Turbo Karate Chop Buzz Action Figure

Mattel  Comments Off on Toy Story Turbo Karate Chop Buzz Action Figure
Jan 142012

Turbo Karate Chop?  I’m in… this Buzz has been ‘wish listed’!  He looks very nice, and comes in updated packaging compared to the original karate chop buzz.  The hype is that these Mega Action 6″ tall figures are supposed to move like and do what the toys in the movies could do.  I’m all for that.  Toy Story 1 Buzz definitely had the martial arts move, even if Woody had to make him use it. The more verisimilitude these toys have, the better the kids (and me!) enjoy it.

The sculpt looks good, and of course it’s a larger figure than the other karate Buzz.  Unfortunately, just like the other one, this toy cannot move his knees.  You don’t get full articulation.  For a static display collector like me, that’s not really a problem.  But still, I can’t see any technical reason the knees couldn’t move.  Might have been a cost factor in production.  Regardless, this is a minor quibble.  I’m looking forward to the day he does his Bruce Lee act in my display shelves!
