Boy, after that last review (The 12″ Ultimate Buzz with all the problems it had) it’s nice to see a good toy again! The Toy Story 3 Buzz Lightyear Space Shooter game may have it’s problems, but it’s also packed with a very cool space blaster.
The game is themed, as titled, from Toy Story 3. You have to save the toys from Lotso at the day care. Comes with the space shooter, 10 foam discs, game board, 4 cardboard jail cells, 20 tokens, 4 purple pawn stands, 8 white pawn stands, 12 character pawns, 1 die and instructions.
Now here’s the meat of the matter: Throw away the game, keep the Buzz Lightyear Spaceshooter. It’s got the perfect colors to complement other Buzz toys and accessories. It’s got a great retro-space look, just like you’d see Buzz use in the Star Command cartoons. Perfect size for small hands, it’s balloony and cartoony in design, so it doesn’t call up images of real guns. Shoots small foam discs. You can even buy accessory packages of discs, 24 discs for about $5.
The truth about the game part, is kids and parents uniformly find it boring and stale. But the gun is just amazing. Runs on 2 AA batteries, easy to handle, even if your young Buzz is too small for Nerf-style guns. The coolest part… it rapid-fires! The soft foam discs bounce far and high. Tons of fun for the kids, though there’s a good chance of losing the discs with the ‘bounce-life’ they have. If you don’t want to just buy a pre-made pack, one enterprising parent bought sheets of foam and cut her own out. Clever, but I think I’d just shell out an extra $5 for the extra pack of 24 discs.
Customer reviews at Amazon are good. Nothing’s ever perfect, but the Space Shooter comes with an average rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
Final thoughts: Buy it. Your kids will have a blast (grin). All Buzz Lightyear fans will be grinning from ear to ear. Toss the game board out. For less than $10, it’s worth every penny.
By the way, the video below sounds a little different, but you can see the Space Shooter in action, and that’s the important part.
