I remember these fondly.  I worked for Blockbuster video for years (well over a decade) and we used to get all kinds of cool standees for new releases coming out.  I’ve owned two of the original theatrical Buzz Lightyears.  One of them actually had blinking lights on Buzz Lightyear’s wings.  Those were far too large for home use, and I wound up passing them along to someone else.
Buzz’s colors are vivid, his pose is pure Buzz Lightyear.  If I was afraid of the dark, having Buzz stand guard at night would make me feel much safer!!  (Though one review said his child was actually afraid of it…)  This Buzz Lightyear standee is, obviously, 27″ x 48″.  The proportions aren’t specified, but since he’s not shown with his wings out, it looks safe to assume he’s taller than he is wide.  When ordering, if you price around, watch out for the height.  Not all Buzz standees are full height, even if they say ‘life size’.  Some claim ‘life size’, but are actually closer to 3 feet tall.
Typically, if you’re not familiar with them, standees are made of sturdy cardboard, and have an extended piece in back to make them stand on their own.  They can easily be leaned up against a wall as well.  I’ve used double-sticky tape to attach mine to the wall.
From my own experience, I’d recommend placement away from traffic areas.  My son (and myself as well) has been known to knock our standees over.  Being only cardboard, it doesn’t take that kind of treatment very well.
I’m not completely sure these are suitable for small children (not if you want the standee to last) unless you have a safe place to stand them.  They make a great theme backdrop for a Buzz Lightyear display collection.

Toy Story 12″ Talking Buzz Lightyear

At this point, we’re getting into the ‘collectible’ Buzz Lightyears.  These are the high-end Buzz figures with great features, and a bigger price.  Yes, he’s amazingly playable.  Lots of fun.  But, if your child is still at that… destructive… age (you know we all were at one point or another!) it would be better to get a less expensive model.

That said, this is another awesome Buzz.  Like the Disney Advanced Talking Buzz Lightyear Action Figure — 12” I talked about before, this one’s got a ton of great features.  To recap, he’s got the authentic Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) voice.  Speaks 15 different phrases from different Toy Story movies.  His wings swivel out and up.  Same as in the movies!  Arm laser, helmet opens at the click of a button, he’s well-articulated (actually a bit better so than most, since he’s a higher quality Buzz than average).  He’s lighted, including alternating wingtip lights, laser, and rocket housing lights.  He comes with Karate chop action (a button on his jetpack).

Oh yes, he’s got motion sensors to tell him when he’s horizontal or vertical, and he responds to sounds.  As much as I love him, don’t expect too much from the sound response.  I have one with the Talk Back mode, and it seems to respond more to tone of voice than actual words.  You also have to speak quite loudly to get him to react.

Still, this is a phenomenal toy.  Bear in mind, this is the Disney/Pixar version (still legitimate, just a different one) and not the Thinkway one.  This is one of the reasons I started writing this site.  There are so many Buzz figures out there, and in some cases the difference is so minute you can hardly tell them apart.  In this particular case, the main difference is the number of phrases.  This one offers 15 phrases, the Thinkway version offers 65 phrases.  That’s the only real way I know to tell them apart, at least when you’re trying to order one online.

Pixar, Thinkway… I prefer the Thinkway model, both for the added feature, and the quality of build.  But I wouldn’t kick this one out…  I’d be proud to have this Buzz included in my collection!
