PeachTree Playthings Buzz and Woody Poster – My 69 cent Treasure

Buzz Lightyear and Woody PosterIt’s been a long time since I’ve posted here.  Haven’t given up on Buzz, just ran out of time in the daily grind.  Keep hoping to re-prioritize, but you know how that goes.  Today was different.  My job at the paper is full time now (as with so many things, that’s good and bad, depending) and I actually get a lunch break.  So today, went home for lunch like usual.  Made one of my favorite meals, cottage cheese with grapes and bananas.

Sat down at the computer to eat and play a little.  Then Mom came home.  She’d been out.  Running errands, shopping, just going about her usual Friday stuff.  She unlocked the door, came into the living room, walked down the hall, and when she turned the corner into our room… she had this great Buzz Lightyear and Woody poster!

Gotta love her!!!  She knows how much I enjoy Toy Story and Buzz Lightyear.  This poster is maybe 18″ x 12″, and made out of a thin plastic.  The images are form-shaped, and follow the contours of the characters.  It has some aging, and a little wear, but is in perfectly useable condition.  The art is Disney-accurate.  Correct colors, proportions, facial expressions.  It was made by Peachtree Playthings.  This was probably a promo poster for a toy display somewhere.  I’m just glad it’s mine now!

She found it at the Salvation Army for .69 cents…  I told her what’s important is not how much the poster cost, it’s how much the poster is worth.  To me, it was really awesome.  My first thought was to add it to the Buzz Lightyear display cabinet out in the exercise room.  But Monique and Mom both took note that Buzz (and Woody) will fit on the wall just behind my digital piano.  So without even having to be devious about it, I get to hang my new poster on the wall right by the Marvel PVC figurine collection!

For now, it’s just … up there.  Propped on top of the piano.  Later, I may frame or matte it.  Either way, it’s a great and unique Buzz Lightyear wall display.

Buzz Lightyear Toy Story Villains Figurine Playset

Buzz Lightyear, Disney, Fisher-Price, Imaginext, Toy Story  Comments Off on Buzz Lightyear Toy Story Villains Figurine Playset
Feb 112013

I wound up opening the package after all. I know, I’m a big kid! (Click for Amazon Link)

This is a pretty unusual set for me. On more than one count. First, my collection is almost exclusively good guys. Yet here’s Buzz included  in a Villain’s set of figurines. It kind of hurts my feelings to find Buzz cast as a villain. After all, he didn’t KNOW he was joining the villains. They seemed so nice at first.

I typically only collect Buzz Lightyear. But when a whole set drops into my lap, and Buzz is one of the set characters, I’m not going to turn it down. Though I really tried this time. Monique and I had an opportunity to buy several random sets of Disney and Marvel characters for our eBay business. It was fully my intention to ‘be good’, and sell these.
That intention faded away when it was time to take pictures for the listings. A bird in the hand is worth more… or maybe a Buzz Lightyear in the set is worth more than an unsold listing on eBay.

The entire set contains Buzz Lightyear, Lots-O’-Huggins Bear, Big Baby, Twitch, Chunk, Stretch, and Sparks. The packaging is nice enough to display as is. No need to remove the characters from the box.

These are not toys, strictly speaking. They’re figurines. Small PVC characters, around 3.5 inches tall. No joints, no articulation, no movement. They make great display pieces. Excellent cake toppers. Decent toys. Just understand up front, they’re strictly figurines.

Quality is good. The painting is clean and simple, the colors just right for the characters. The villains are nicely represented, though of course my emphasis is on Buzz. The painting and the sculpt do a good job capturing his character. His colors lean toward ‘pastel’. I prefer bolder colors personally, but that’s just a minor note.

If you’re like me and prefer Buzz, this set might not be to your taste. But if you want a unique collection of Toy Story characters, this hits the spot. Buzz Lightyear in a villains collection. That makes it different enough to justify keeping the whole set.

Given how nicely they’re packaged, the whole set will go well as is. I may take off the top plastic bubble. Or not. It depends on whether my goal is to see them clearly, or keep dust off them.  (Edit:  I wound up opening the package to take a clearer picture.  For dust protection, I can leave the cover back on, though.)

Either way, as PVC collectible Toy Story figures, this is a great set.

Buzz Lightyear Disney Toy Story Cupcake Stand – My Mini-Buzz Display Case

Disney, Disney/Pixars Toy Story, party favors  Comments Off on Buzz Lightyear Disney Toy Story Cupcake Stand – My Mini-Buzz Display Case
Nov 302012

Cupcakes? What cupcakes? This is my mini-Buzz display stand! (Click the pic to see at Amazon)

The Disney Toy Story Cupcake Stand is made out of cardboard, with designs featuring my favorite spaceman and friends.  Even though Buzz Lightyear isn’t part of the official title, he’s got prominent placement through the design.

It’s true, a cupcake stand isn’t part of my normal interests, but in this case, there’s a certain space ranger that makes it fun.  Besides, you may not believe it but I actually have this!  Mom got it for my big 50-year blowout birthday party.  It did fine with cupcakes, but the real reason I have still have it is because it makes a great display stand for my smaller Buzz figures.

The stand… stands… 12 inches tall, with a bottom base of 9 inches.  As far as cupcakes go, my impression is that it’s a bit small.  I suppose smaller child’s cupcakes would work fine.  The height isn’t so bad, but you just can’t fit that many cupcakes on the platters. It worked really well as the cupcake centerpiece display, and room for the rest all around it.

Also, the stand is not extremely sturdy.  A few careless children all reaching for a cupcake, it seems highly likely someone’s going to knock some cupcakes to the floor.

Do I recommend this one?  Kind of a hard call to make.  If you’re going to use it for actual cupcakes, then I recommend you keep the cupcakes small, and the stand somewhere visible so they’ll enjoy it, but out of reach, so it won’t be knocked over.

If, like me, you want it for a display stand, then yes, I’m more comfortable recommending it.  Put it on a stable shelf somewhere, artfully pose a few Buzz Lightyear mini figures around it, and it’s a winner.

Price is where I have to draw the line though.  For a few pieces of lightweight cardboard, the current price is $7.84.  That’s marginal already.  If you have to pay shipping too, then it’s a deal-breaker.  If it was a better price, or had free shipping, I’d be happier.

What it really boils down to, is how much of a die-hard Buzz fan is it for?  If you’re doing a full Buzz/Toy Story themed party, then by all means, go for it.

You see why I’m having a hard time making the call here.  I like it… but not for cupcakes… and not at the current price.  Try Wal-Mart, if you have the option.  I’ve heard it’s less than $5.00 in-store.  That’s where Mom got mine from.

If you do get it, at least it’s got some after-the-party usefulness!

Toy Story 3 Foam Gliders (4 count)

Disney, Hallmark, party favors, Toy Story 3  Comments Off on Toy Story 3 Foam Gliders (4 count)
Oct 072012

Who wouldn’t like a flying Buzz Lightyear?  After all, it’s the one thing he can’t do that even Buzz things he CAN!  I shouldn’t admit this, but when he leaped off the stair railing in Toy Story, my heart just about broke.  Animated movie or not, I can really relate to it.  That moment when a deeply cherished belief is broken.  It’s no wonder it destroyed his faith for a while.

Fortunately for Buzz, Woody was there to correct Buzz’s priorities. Buzz might have thought it was all about his total abilities as a Space Ranger, but ultimately, it was his value as Andy’s toy that gave Buzz a purpose in being.  Woody may not have intended everything that happened as a lesson for Buzz… and as a matter of fact, it turned into a learning event for Woody as well as Buzz…  but things tend to happen for a reason.

So when I was searching for Buzz Lightyear collectibles from the party supplies, I was thrilled to find a flying Buzz.  Unfortunately for this party favor, Woody is not there to help.  And even with wings, this Buzz needs a lot of help.  To put it simply, he doesn’t fly.  Not far, not well, and he certainly doesn’t survive many crash landings.

Bear in mind, it IS a cheaply made piece of foam.  Not intended for long-term play.  Not very expensive.  I suppose you get what you pay for in this instance.  He looks pretty neat, but just doesn’t have the balance or durability to make him a winner.  IF I was going to use these gliders in a Buzz-themed party, I would assemble them and hang them from the ceiling as displays.

They do come with plastic tips to improve flying balance, but the tips aren’t much help.  As far as the durability goes, one customer on Amazon suggested clear contact paper.  It won’t make them fly any better, but they might survive the children’s playing a bit longer.    For a cheap party favor, I don’t expect much.  But a little research indicates these were originally Hallmark products.  I do expect better from Hallmark.  Guess that’s why they’re being sold by 3rd party vendors.

The best thing I can say about these, is they look good, with well-done graphics, and you get 4 per pack.  Oh well.  Forewarned… don’t buy these unless you just want them for decorations.  Sorry, I’d love to report better.  If I find a better version, I’ll be sure to update this.  As they are, I’m sure the kids would be immensely disappointed with the playability.  Don’t disappoint the kids- pass these by.

Toy Story 3 Buzz Flying Petite Cake Topper

A Birthday Place, Disney, party favors, Toy Story 3  Comments Off on Toy Story 3 Buzz Flying Petite Cake Topper
Sep 272012

More Toy Story themed party favors!  I can’t believe it took me this long to think of looking for Buzz lightyear under party favors…
This one is a classic Buzz Lightyear pose as he flies across the galaxy.  He looks pretty good in the one close-up picture provided.  I could wish for a clearer pic, and a view of the back.  But from what can be seen, he looks right.  At least enough so that it has that correct ‘Buzz Lightyear’ feel to it.
The sculpt and the pose appeal to me.  Not enough detail on the picture to make out the painting quality, but it seems at least decent.  Though they’ve got the wings solid green, that’s not a deal-killer in this case.  One thing I don’t like… the picture shows the cake topper on top of a small roundish cake.  It’s an excellently designed cake, but my first assumption was to think it was all part of the topper.  I was wrong.  The topper itself is comprised of ONLY the Buzz in flight figure.  If you look carefully, (it blends in with the white frosting) you can see the round base that keeps Buzz upright.
At least the price, size, and overall quality make more sense now.  At first I was trying to figure out how they did all that for the price.  Now I know… they didn’t.  So be sure and look twice.  It’s not a big sculpted topper, it’s just a small figurine of Buzz.
As small plastic figurine cake toppers go, it’s a very nice one.  I’d enjoy seeing it on my birthday cake… but I think I’d want a bit more.  A few figures here and there on the cake, maybe some nice decorated images in the frosting.  But as part of an ensemble cake decoration, it’s a great topper.
On the other hand, I like it very much simply as a small pvc plastic Buzz Lightyear figurine.  I don’t require high detail on the small ones (though it’s always cool when one does have it).  It’s a great small piece to include as a background support item for my larger figures.

Buzz Lightyear (Disney Pixar Toy Story 3) Life-Size Standup Poster , 27×48

Buzz, Disney, Disney / Pixar TS3, Toy Story  Comments Off on Buzz Lightyear (Disney Pixar Toy Story 3) Life-Size Standup Poster , 27×48

I remember these fondly.  I worked for Blockbuster video for years (well over a decade) and we used to get all kinds of cool standees for new releases coming out.  I’ve owned two of the original theatrical Buzz Lightyears.  One of them actually had blinking lights on Buzz Lightyear’s wings.  Those were far too large for home use, and I wound up passing them along to someone else.
Buzz’s colors are vivid, his pose is pure Buzz Lightyear.  If I was afraid of the dark, having Buzz stand guard at night would make me feel much safer!!  (Though one review said his child was actually afraid of it…)  This Buzz Lightyear standee is, obviously, 27″ x 48″.  The proportions aren’t specified, but since he’s not shown with his wings out, it looks safe to assume he’s taller than he is wide.  When ordering, if you price around, watch out for the height.  Not all Buzz standees are full height, even if they say ‘life size’.  Some claim ‘life size’, but are actually closer to 3 feet tall.
Typically, if you’re not familiar with them, standees are made of sturdy cardboard, and have an extended piece in back to make them stand on their own.  They can easily be leaned up against a wall as well.  I’ve used double-sticky tape to attach mine to the wall.
From my own experience, I’d recommend placement away from traffic areas.  My son (and myself as well) has been known to knock our standees over.  Being only cardboard, it doesn’t take that kind of treatment very well.
I’m not completely sure these are suitable for small children (not if you want the standee to last) unless you have a safe place to stand them.  They make a great theme backdrop for a Buzz Lightyear display collection.

Toy Story – Buzz Lightyear Alternative Adult Costume Kit

Buzz, Costume, Disguise, Disney, Disney/Pixars Toy Story, Disquise, Pixar, Toy Story  Comments Off on Toy Story – Buzz Lightyear Alternative Adult Costume Kit

This is a great costume accessory, but be very clear… The Toy Story Buzz Lightyear Disguise Accessory Kit is NOT an entire costume.  As the (rather long) title states, it’s a costume accessory kit.  You get the purple hood, with circular ear panels to mimic a spaceman’s hood liner.  You get Buzz Lightyear gloves. And you get a 43″ wide inflatable Buzz Jetpack.  The inflatable jetpack is nicely designed to mimic Buzz’s jetpack.
These are all great accessories, but I can’t stress enough… the actual costume is NOT included!
I already have a Buzz Lightyear t-shirt,  if I buy this hood/glove/jetpack kit, All I’d need are some appropriate pants!  I haven’t done Halloween in a number of years, but if I could gear up with this, I’d be hitting the neighborhood streets with my candy bag!  (At least I wouldn’t be running through the streets making whooshing noises…)
I do like this Buzz Lightyear costume kit.  A lot.  That being said, it would have been nice if they’d included boots.  Too bad, but what you get for your money is a good deal and a great way to make your already existing Buzz costume stand out a little bit better.

Toy Story Buzz Lightyear Astronaut Costume White Adult T-shirt Tee Medium

BuzzLightyearTshirt
If you’re a fan of themed T-Shirts, (and Buzz Lightyear of course!) then this is a wonderful addition to your collection.  Made of cotton, and officially licensed by Disney, this Toy Story themed t-shirt is fun for any age. Available in a number of sizes in Toddler and Adults.  I love the cleverness… it’s not just a ‘character’ shirt, with an image on the front.  It’s a wearable t-shirt of Buzz’s upper torso armor, putting your child (or you…) in official Star Command uniform.
Mine was a gift, so it may not be exactly the same as this one.  Close enough to get the idea, though.  There are currently 3 reviews online for it; one person rated it low and said the colors faded too much in the first washing.  To counter that, the other 2 reviews give it a 5-star rating, and praise it highly.
I’ve had mine since Christmas 2011, and I do wear it quite often…  this is one of my favorite shirts!
Note:  Styles change occasionally.  Be sure to look at the actual image when ordering!

Monique has done it again- she went to a nearby yard sale this morning while I was still sleeping.  When she got back, I was barely aware of her climbing back into bed.  I rolled over, and heard a humming noise.  Opened one eye, to see her gleefully holding a spinning Buzz Lightyear toy over my head!  His wings and upper torso spins on a flashlight-like handle.  The wingtips light up. A simple push-button controls on/off.

I can remember years ago, when working at Blockbuster video, we used to sell this particular Buzz Lightyear, but we sold out before I bought one.  Can’t remember the price, but it seemed reasonable at the time.  He’s hard (or maybe impossible) to find any more.  Unless I’m looking for the wrong title.  Searched Amazon, eBay, and Google without finding any like him.

Buzz has obviously seen combat with young children.  Puts me in mind of the day-care scene in Toy Story III.  But he still spins, and his lights still light up.  Now that he’s been rescued from the yard sale table, he’ll be joining my other Buzz Lightyear toys.  If anybody knows where to find Spinning Buzz for sale, let me know and I’ll share the link.  For now, it looks like he’s a highly-collectible, one-of-a-kind treasured memento of days gone by…   :^)

If a source turns up, I’ll post the link here.

Buzz was spinning while I took the picture, so you can see a light trail on the right.

Toy Story Buzz Lightyear Embossed Metal Lunch Box

Toy Story Embossed Metal Lunch Box

Click the pic to see at Amazon

Once again, having a reputation as a Buzz Lightyear fan has paid off.  My son and his wife came to visit me recently.  It was sort of a belated birthday get-together, and they came bearing cool gifts.  In a creative move, they used a Toy Story 2 Buzz Lightyear metal lunchbox as a container for some of the other gifts.
When I opened the gift wrapping, there was my excellent new Buzz Lightyear lunchbox!  All by itself, that would have been great… but since the lunch box seemed heavier than it should have been, I opened it up and found an Indiana Jones T-shirt and a very high-tech watch as well.  Kind of a triple-threat gift.

If you’re thinking of the old-time metal school lunch boxes, it’s not quite the same.  First off, the new breed of lunchbox is smaller- about 6″ x 7 1/2″ x 2 3/4″.  There’s also no thermos inside.  I see these as being more like a collectible lunchbox than an actual meant-for-use box.  If you like, they can still carry food, but mine’s going on display with my Buzz Lightyear collection.  It’ll make a cool backdrop for some of my smaller and medium Buzz Lightyear figures.

Another point to note; the lunch box is embossed on one side, and smooth on the other.  The handle is a shaped plastic grip (a bit too small for my adult hands), with a Toy Story sticker lining the grip inset.  While licensed by Disney, it’s produced by the Tin Box Co.

This being a licensed product, the side art is spot-on perfect and the quality is exactly as it should be.  It’ll be great as a display item.  Like I mentioned, I’ll arrange some of my smaller Buzz figures around it like a small diorama.  Below is a pic showing my Buzz lunch box as it currently stands in the collection.  It’ll probably be moved around a bit until it’s just right.

This is an excellent addition to my collection, and I can happily recommend it to other Buzz Lightyear or metal lunchbox fans!
